With this decision, the Court of Cassation clarified certain elements of the crime of slavery. This crime includes significant loss of individual self-determination, not necessarily accompanied by complete deprivation of personal freedom.  In the case at hand, a minor girl had been reduced to full slavery and forced to hack. Special aggravating circumstances introduced through law No. 172 of 2012, on ratification and implementation of the Council of Europe Convention on the Protection of Children against Sexual Exploitation and Sexual Abuse, were applicable in the case.
