UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), UNHCR Recommendations on Important Aspects of Refugee Protection in Italy , July 2012

The UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) recommended that Italy improve national law and practice concerning access to national territory and respect for the non-refoulement principle (bearing in mind the 2012 judgment of the European Court of Human Rights in the Hirsi case) and other aspects, including: the protection of unaccompanied children; access to, and quality of, asylum procedures; the reception conditions for asylum-seekers; and local integration of refugees. The UNHCR also called on the Italian Government to align its current annual contribution to the UNHCR activity to the average level of its contributions in previous years.
