In furtherance of Recommendation No. 123 (2007) of the Berne Convention’s Standing Committee, the Ministry for the Environment adopted decree of 24 December 2012, under which it is now forbidden to trade, to breed and to detain in Italy (with few derogations) specimens of three squirrel species, defined as “alien squirrels”. The 2013 Report of the Italian government, which contains information about the decree, complemented a number of previous annual reports on the same matter.
