Through Recommendation No. 123 of 2007, the Berne Convention’s Standing Committee asked the Italian government and the authorities of the Lombardia Region to immediately start an eradication programme in Italy, and most particularly in the Ticino Valley, of the Grey Squirrel, whose uncontrolled dispersal was putting at risk the conservation of the European species. In his Report submitted to the 32nd Meeting of the Committee, the Italian government gave information on progress made in implementing an ad hoc Life+ project, and on the drafting of national norms on the matter (later adopted by decree of the Ministry of the Environment, on 24 December 2012).
