Convention Concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage, Joint UNESCO WHC/ICOMOS Reactive Monitoring Mission to the Archaeological Areas of Pompei, Hercolaneum and Torre Annunziata (Italy), report 7-10 January 2013 (C829, 10 January 2013)

A joint ICOMOS-UNESCO reactive monitoring mission to the Archaeological Areas of Pompei, Herculaneum and Torre Annunziata took place from 7th to 10th January, 2013, as follow-up to the 2010 mission. The report of the reactive monitoring mission considers that parts of the property are at risk of deterioration at present and that the next two years will be crucial in demonstrating the effectiveness of the diverse ongoing initiatives. Therefore, the World Heritage Centre and the Advisory Bodies did not recommend to the World Heritage Committee to consider the possibility of inscribing the property on the List of World Heritage in Danger, as suggested by the Committee in its decision 35 COM 7B.96, but to monitor closely the state of conservation of the property, by requesting annual progress reports. In the framework of the initiatives for improving the management of the UNESCO site, Italy adopted law decree No. 91/2013 containing some measures for preservation and enhancement.
